Ravenor Primary Nature Garden

Garden Learning Space

We designed a designated outdoor space for children of all ages, to learn how to grow plants for food – and study the natural world. A large greenhouse, cold-frames, and raised planter beds give space for growing and nurturing of vegetable crops. Elsewhere, we created a 'wonder walk' of raised timber walkways that meander through stands of tall bamboo, wrapping a large woodland stumpery garden – providing a habitat for insects [that children can study]. We included a nature area planted with woodland bulbs, flowering ground-cover plants and shrubs – which children can explore along the paths leading to a woodpile for mini-beasts. In the centre of the garden, we installed semi-circular seating and tables where classes can gather for more focused outdoor lessons. Around the perimeter we planted a wildlife-hedge of bird-friendly plants – bringing seasonal colour and providing nesting and feeding for birds.
