Jenyn's Forest School Learning Space

Forest Learning Space

We built the roundhouse structure in a natural clearing using natural, tree-shaped hardwood poles. These were set using an the ancient method of backfilling holes with rammed earth – so no harmful concrete was needed, ensuring the delicate ecosystem was best protected. The Cedar wood roof shingles were designed to sympathetically blend with the surroundings – providing a fully water-tight canopy for year-round outdoor lessons. Cedar timber is naturally rot-resistant and highly durable – boasting a much lower carbon footprint than most other roofing materials available. We used natural, waney-edged boards to clad the lower walls – leaving the upper sections open to the surrounding greenery. We installed a paved fire circle for children to safely learn how to build and tend fires – with a central brazier also used for camp-style cooking. A small waterproof storage box was also included.
